Temporomandibular Joint Dysfunction
Temporomandibular Joint Dysfunction is commonly known as TMJ. The term TMJ is used to cover a variety of problems and dysfunction associated with the muscles of mastication, muscles that move the jaw.
What Are the Symptoms of Temporomandibular Joint Dysfunction?
Signs and symptoms of Temporomandibular Joint Dysfunction vary in the way that they present themselves. However, symptoms will usually affect more than one of the components of the jaw and the muscles used to move it. Some of the most common symptoms include headache, sore jaw, facial pain, earache, loose teeth, worn or fractured teeth, frequent toothaches, as well as neck and shoulder pain.
There has been research that shows there is no one specific factor for an individual to develop Temporomandibular Joint Dysfunction disorder. Some of the factors that have been linked to TMJ disorder include trauma, jaw clenching, an improper bite, tooth grinding, stress, and arthritis. Because TMJ dysfunction varies from person to person and is affected by different factors, each treatment is different. Each patient receives treatment that is tailored to fit the specific needs of their problems. The different treatment options may include mild medications, custom-made appliances to relieve pressure from grinding and clenching, physical therapy, and suggested behavior.
If you are suffering from one or more symptoms of TMJ dysfunction, schedule your appointment with Associates of Dentistry. When you come in for your visit, we will discuss your symptoms, possible causes, and your treatment options.
